Why would a Mindfulness Trainer ask you to take a tip from a popular Showtime series, Billions, based on wealth, power, corruption and drama? I’ll get to that shortly. But first, let’s kick around this show, worthy of binge-watching while you are snuggled up in your hotel room, once again in another city, snacks at the bedside, during your latest business trip, meeting or event.
Tug-of-war with Morality and Ethics
The storyline is intriguing with great writing, incredible characters and an amazing cast that plays a tug-of-war game with morality and ethics. This lays the foundation of the series that is overflowing with deception and deviousness, which I suppose keeps people watching, as drama rates almost double in popularity over comedy for television viewers. And with Season 4, premiering on Sunday, March 17th, they must be doing something that the viewers like.
Ethical Behavior Line
What I find particularly interesting with Billions is the character development. The gruff, self-involved US Attorney, Chuck Rhoades, who plays to his over inflated moral compass, and has a personal mission to take the ever-slippery main character, Bobby Axelrod (“Axe”) down. Axe is brilliant, handsome, ruthless and an impressive hedge-fund king in Manhattan that wants for nothing in the material world. And the ethical behavior line, is constantly being blurred as he escapes the clutches of his archnemesis. Yet, there are times when he searches for self-awareness.
In-House Performance Coach
That brings me to my favorite character or at least in the first two seasons, Wendy Rhoades, played by Maggie Siff. She is the wife of U.S. Attorney, Rhoades as well as Axe’s secret “weapon”. What a predicament! Wendy is Axe Capital’s in-house Performance Coach. She has been there from the beginning and holds the role of keeping the core team emotionally healthy so that Axe Capital continues humming and the rainmakers are functioning at their highest optimal performance.
Wall Street Psychiatrists and Performance Coaches
As a side note, did you know that Wall Street does hire psychologists and performance coaches? The Business Insider’s 2017 articleHow Wall Street psychologists and Tony Robbins inspired one of the main characters on Showtime’s ‘Billions’ states:
“It turns out that there is indeed a niche industry for Wall Street psychiatrists and performance coaches, intended to get traders and investors back on their game, to avoid the loss of potentially millions of dollars of other people’s money.”
Turning Around Emotions & Outcomes
And although this is a television series, the character of Wendy Rhoades does an amazing job turning emotions and outcomes around for the better just like her reality counterpart. With sharp understanding of human nature, a nurturing yet professional approach and exceptional coaching techniques, Wendy smooths relationships, eases internal struggle and saves Axe Capital millions. Not to mention the size of her bonus, $5 million, is a direct reflection of what Axe has perceived her value to be to the company.
The Mindful Tip
And there it is. The Mindful Tip! That came to you all the way from a New York based high drama. Just like in the fantasy world of Billions, real professional Coaches positively impact the lives of individuals and the company’s bottom line. Fiction reflects fact! Coaches go by varied names of what might be trendy, or an industry aligned term but for the most part the coach’s job is the same. Bring about change and the optimal performance of the person and/or company. A coach facilitates and guides an individual personally and/or professionally to develop a process in order to experience a positive shift. A mindfulness-based coach is the same.
Trio of Transformation
Coaching based on a mindfulness foundation provides a platform that is strong and is a launchpad for your next level performance and that of your organization. Understanding the power of the “Trio of Transformation” – Mind, Body & Spirit assists in the fortification of the whole being. It takes an immersion of all to provide an integrative process of leveling up your performance. Learn to live and lead mindfully with the integration of the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual energy for maximum results in any given area of your life.
External World Reflects Internal World
Even if you have lost your way, feel stuck or unmotivated – the mindfulness-based coaching proves the inner work reflects out into the outer world of your personal and business lives more positively. With core concepts, tools and processes, the mindful-shift through mindfulness-based coaching is a rapid limitless-shift. With this movement comes with it a new energy of attraction to what you want to create. A more confident approach and a level of resonance that attracts what you desire. Just as mentioned earlier, that drama television series are more popular than comedy, even though you may think that in the state of a stressful environment, people would opt to laugh instead. To the contrary, we resonate with what we are vibrationally. And thus, your external world is reflecting what is going on in your internal world. So what shows do you watch?
Shining the Light on Blind Spots
Successful people understand the value of a professional coach to provide them the mirror and the insights to reach and acquire the next level of development. A good coach will provide that reflection and shine the light on the blinded areas of the personality until inner awareness arrives through self-observation, emotional shifting and personal expansion. Those being coached, must be the ones to do the heavy lifting. It does not happen by osmosis. Those who utilize coaches, intimately understand that it is a powerful investment to make for personal growth. And retaining a coach for the wellbeing of employees, and ultimately the health of the company sets the intention for the organization’s culture itself– that of self-care. Mark my words, in-house coaching or contracted coaching will soon be a mainstay for highly successful organizations.
Contracting a Mindfulness Coach
Contracting a Mindfulness-Based or Performance Coach, for yourself and/or your organization is a home run. Envision receiving guidance on how to navigate daily emotional contrast and for the team to experience the same benefits of support. How to live and lead mindfully, is a core component that supports your bottom line! Not only within your business but also in your Meetings.
Mindful Meetings is no longer outside the box. If you are not making plans to incorporate Mindfulness training in your meetings, and/or Coaching for your team, you will be missing the ace up the sleeve and you will be gambling with your optimal health and wellbeing.
